Come learn about a diverse set of doers—half women of color—turning mushrooms into leather, CO2 into a protein that tastes like bacon, dark villages into solar-powered communities, and more. Why the Time is Now to Shift Towards A Strength-Based Approach

For too long, the field of education has focused on what’s wrong with students, staff, and even parents. Deficit thinking is the culprit. It has created a powerful narrative within education. At times, this narrative seems too enormous to shift away from because it’s difficult to unlearn harmful patterns and because the majority of dismantling deficit thinking depends on one’s ability to self-reflect and self-correct. Now, more than ever, is the time to shift away from what’s wrong to what’s strong. In this session, you will be inspired and energized to begin practically implementing a strength-based approach, both professionally and personally.

Broaching Difficult Topics with Students Through Literature and the Screen

In White Bird and Wonder, author RJ Palacio deals with bullying and injustice and learning about the importance of kindness and having the courage to speak out. With the movie WHITE BIRD, Palacio offers an opportunity for teachers and librarians to teach these important lessons which are sadly more relevant than ever.

Empowering Learners - Culturally Responsive Assessment for Multilingual Students

When supportive learning relationships are in place, multilingual learners become more engaged in school. The regular practice of formative assessment can build and sustain these relationships between teachers and students by performing two key functions—first, by making the learning expectations of the classroom audible and visible, and second, by meeting students where they are at and bridging the gaps to where they want to go. Involving multilingual learners in the co-construction of their own success criteria is not only instructionally effective, but it is also the way that we empower our young people for the future.
