Working Groups and Sponsor Meetings

Attendees either participate in a facilitated small group discussions focused on important topics related to strategic planning or meet with industry partners. Topics will include:

  • Preparing Teachers for the 22nd Century: Teachers often don’t have the time or opportunity to meaningfully develop skills with the demands of the classroom, especially when it comes to technology integration. With the 22nd Century rapidly approaching, how can we better respect the demands of the profession, but also be sensitive to the skills that learners will need to be successful in the world? How might collaborations with education adjacent institutions contribute? In this presentation, Heidi Carr, Instructional Facilitator at Clark County School District (NV) and Mike Lang, Chief Innovation Program Officer at ed.Xtraordinary, will present some of the initiatives they’ve designed that allow teachers to be the best versions of themselves while concurrently giving learners the chance to learn at their own pace and in their own space.

  • How to Improve Support for Computer Science: Only 3% of High Schools in California enroll in Computer Science courses and only 39% of high schools offer Computer Science courses. The state recognizes this urgent need and has codified a CS Supplementary Authorization that provides funding for pre-service and inservice teachers in these efforts. To support this work, UCLA has developed an equity-focused CS Supplementary Authorization pathway within their teacher education program. In this session, Imelda Nava, Director of the UCLA STEM+C3 and STEM Education Faculty At UCLA, reviews details of the program that bridges computational thinking and data in secondary math and science classrooms to computer science principles, including their challenges, successes, and learning
