Attendees arrive to register, network, and enjoy breakfast, as well as get their “Passport to Prizes” pass. Throughout the day, attendees will complete their Passport by visiting with our partners either in scheduled meetings or during lunch if they do not have scheduled meetings.

Edtech luminary and international keynote speaker Carl Hooker brings his enthusiasm and passion for education to the Summit as our host and MC for the day. Carl has been a part of a strong educational shift with technology integration during his 23 years in education, and he will facilitate fun and interactive conversations throughout the day to ensure attendees walk away with innovative ideas they can put into action.

Dr. Kristina Whalen, Foothill’s College new president, welcomes attendees to Foothill College and speaks on her recent appointment as leader of the college.

Keynote: Ready, Ready, Set, FAIL! Using Failure and Risk-taking to Unlock Creativity and Innovation 

Our schools have traditionally existed to teach students conformity and compliance. Carl Hooker’s keynote explores how we can create a space where students create innovative ideas to solve the problems of tomorrow? Risk-taking and embracing failure can be great ways to stimulate creativity in the classroom. During this very interactive session based on the best selling book Ready, Set, FAIL!, we’ll discuss the science behind failure and the roadblocks to creativity. After all, It’s not how you fall down, it’s how you get back up!

We hear a lot about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, but are schools creating a culture that builds career pathways for diverse leaders? Many districts have every intention to answer “yes” to this question, but might not have the tools they need to achieve this goal. In this presentation, Lorrie Owens, Chief Technology Officer, San Mateo County Office of Education, shares tactical guidelines that can support your efforts to diversify your staff.

What are the California Open Educational resources? How do administrators ensure that students and staff are getting the resources they need to be successful? How does that work tie in with the work the district is doing to educate its children?

Working Group: What is Maker-Centered Learning?

Maker-Centered Learning provides insight into what that means, and offers tools and knowledge that can be applied anywhere that learning takes place. In maker-centered learning environments, students imagine, design, and create projects that align the content of learning with hands-on application. Aaron Ragsdale, Makery Manager at Stanford University, introduced attendees to this concept and guides an interactive conversation to discuss ways your district can incorporate some of these pedagogical principles.
